WestJet Launches First-Ever Non-stop Service Between Sudbury and Calgary

News Release Posted: 12 June 2025
New summer-seasonal route connects Northeastern Ontario to Western Canada with direct flights
Sudbury, ON – The Greater Sudbury Airport (YSB) is celebrating a major milestone today with the launch of WestJet’s new, non-stop service between Sudbury and Calgary. This summer-seasonal route marks the first direct air link between Northeastern Ontario and Alberta, representing a critical step in strengthening regional connectivity and expanding economic, business, and leisure travel opportunities between the two regions.
Beginning today, direct flights will operate twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays, continuing through the end of October as part of WestJet’s summer schedule. The seasonal service is set to return in summer 2026, running from May through October 2026. Operated on WestJet’s fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft, the route offers a convenient, efficient, and enjoyable travel experience between the two regions.
“We are thrilled to welcome WestJet back to Sudbury and this new route represents more than just a flight — it’s a direct investment in our region,” said Giovanna Verrilli, CEO of the Greater Sudbury Airport. “We know there was strong demand for air service to Western Canada and we are proud to work alongside WestJet to make this a reality for the people of Sudbury and beyond.”
“WestJet is excited to be back in Sudbury today celebrating the launch of our seasonal non-stop service to Calgary,” said Mike Perkins, WestJet Senior Manager, Airport Affairs. “This connection opens the door for travellers in Northeastern Ontario to access 70 destinations through our global hub in Calgary. It’s a meaningful step in strengthening regional air service, supporting tourism and driving economic growth across the region.”
While many travellers in Northeastern Ontario are accustomed to connecting through traditional hubs in Southern Ontario, the Calgary International Airport provides an exciting new option for flight connections. WestJet’s Calgary hub offers convenient and seamless connections to a wide range of destinations across Western Canada, the United States, Asia, and beyond. With this new route, travellers in Sudbury and Northeastern Ontario now have greater flexibility and access to WestJet’s extensive network — opening up new possibilities for both business and leisure travel.
The Greater Sudbury Airport has made air service development a key focus, alongside ongoing passenger experience improvements and strong advocacy for Canadian aviation. As regional airports across the country continue to face recovery challenges following the COVID-19 pandemic, attracting and supporting new airline service is more important than ever.
“The success of this route will depend on local support,” added Verrilli. “We encourage residents, businesses, and travellers in the region to get out and use this flight. As with all regional routes, demand will dictate its future — and we want to see it thrive.”
